Three Fit-Tested Tips for Getting the Perfect Mask Seal
By Mary Cruz, Mask Fit Tester at Blokhaus
As a certified fit tester at Blokhaus (that’s me in the picture), I’ve helped hundreds of people get the right fit for their respirators—and believe me, even the smallest tweak can make all the difference. Here are my top three tips to get it right:
1. Start with a Clean Face
Facial hair, makeup, and even moisturiser can break the seal of your mask. Come to your fit test with a clean, dry face. For anyone with a beard, trimming it right back—or going clean-shaven—is often necessary. It’s not about looks, it’s about safety.
2. Don’t Just Guess the Size
One size definitely doesn’t fit all. The model or size your co-worker wears might not suit you at all. Let the fit tester guide you through options—trying different sizes and styles (like cup vs. flat-fold) can help you find the right match for your face shape.
3. Master the Don and Seal Check
Even the best-fitting mask won’t protect you if it’s not put on properly. Learn how to don your mask correctly every time and always do a seal check before you start work. A quick inhale/exhale test can reveal leaks you wouldn’t notice otherwise.
At the end of the day, mask fit testing isn’t just a box to tick—it’s about making sure you’re protected. If you’re unsure, ask questions. That’s what we’re here for.
